What Is Impression Share?

Impression Share is the proportion of eligible ad impressions that your campaign receives in Google Ads. The metric compares your actual visibility with the opportunities available under the campaign’s targeting, budget, bids, location settings and other auction conditions. It helps separate limited reach from weak engagement after an ad appears.

Key Takeaways About Impression Share

  • Impression Share measures visibility, not clicks or lead quality.
  • Budget and targeting settings can restrict available impressions.
  • A high share does not prove that ads perform well.

Impression Share is calculated from the impressions a campaign receives and the impressions it could have received under its current settings. Google Ads considers factors such as keyword targeting, location, budget, bids and auction eligibility. A campaign may have limited visibility because its settings exclude some searches or because competing ads win relevant auctions.

Google Ads can also show lost impression share categories that point to budget or rank limits. These categories help explain whether restricted reach comes from available spend, ad and landing page relevance, bid strength or other auction signals. Impression Share should be read alongside click-through rate, conversions and search term data, because visibility alone does not show whether an ad attracts suitable enquiries.

Expert Note

When we manage Google Ads campaigns, we check Impression Share against targeting, search terms, budget status and conversion data. We look for the reason behind restricted visibility before changing bids or campaign settings. This keeps decisions tied to relevant searches and useful enquiry quality.

A Brisbane electrician targets emergency electrical searches across selected suburbs. Impression Share may fall when the campaign’s location settings, budget or ad rank limit participation in suitable auctions, even when the ads receive some clicks.
