What Is Indexability?

Indexability is a search engine's ability to access, process and store a webpage in its index for possible inclusion in search results. A page may be crawlable but still lack indexability when technical directives, access restrictions, duplicate signals or page-level problems prevent a search engine from treating the page as an eligible result.

Key Takeaways About Indexability

  • Indexability concerns eligibility for an index, not a page's search position.
  • Robots directives and page status can affect whether search engines process a page.
  • Crawlability and indexability describe related but different technical conditions.

How Indexability Works

Indexability is assessed through the signals that tell search engines whether a page may be processed and stored. These signals include the page's HTTP status, robots directives, canonical information and access settings. A blocked resource can prevent proper processing, while a noindex directive can ask a search engine not to retain the page.

Crawlability describes whether a search engine can reach a URL. Indexability considers what happens after that access. A page can be reachable but excluded from the index, or difficult to reach because of blocked paths and weak internal links. Technical checks compare these signals with the pages that should appear in search results, then identify conflicts that need correction.

Expert Note

When we review Indexability, we inspect access rules, page directives, response status and canonical signals together. We also compare important service pages with their internal links, so a technical setting does not quietly keep a useful page out of search consideration.

Indexability in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Brisbane electrician's emergency service page returns a normal page response but includes a noindex directive. The page remains accessible to visitors, yet search engines are instructed not to retain it in their index.
